Notification and registration

When do I have to register?

Once you complete your training program  :

  • Your educational institution will send the OIIQ your transcript, indicating that you have successfully completed the program;
  • The Order will then send, to your mailing address, the documentation you need to register for the examination. Make sure that you update the e-mail address in your file, if necessary, by writing to etudiants-br@oiiq.org.

Your e-mail address must be unique and exclusive, so as to make sure that communications from the OIIQ are confidential and so that you can access the reserved section.

Although you may take up to two years and three tries to pass the OIIQ professional examination and meet the other conditions for obtaining your permit, you are required to register for the professional examination each time you are notified of the examination.

Registration for the professional examination

Register online in the reserved section. Pay the registration fees by the deadline of Monday, August 21, 2017.

Important  : Your registration must be valid and complete before you register for the professional examination. If you would like any further information, please contact the Registrar’s Office and Examinations at 514 935-2501, option 2, or 1 800 363-6048, option 2, or etudiants-br@oiiq.org.

If you have been the subject of a decision of a Canadian court convicting you of a criminal offence or if the disciplinary council of a professional order in Quebec or a professional body outside of Quebec has rendered a decision leading to the revocation of your permit, your striking off the Roll, or the restriction or suspension of your right to practise, you must report this in section 3 of the form.

Confirmation of registration for the professional examination

Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation of registration and the necessary information: location, date and time of the exam and the exam procedure.

The final choice of the examination centre where you will be invited to sit the examination is at the Order’s discretion. You may ask to sit the exam at a specific centre, however.

Exam locations

The September 2017 professional examination will be held simultaneously in:

  • Montreal
  • Quebec City

Why this change?

A number of factors prompted the OIIQ Board of Directors to centralize the official professional exam in Montreal and Quebec City. To learn more, consult the FAQ.

Some details on the registration process

  • When you register, you must indicate where you wish to sit the exam, i.e. in Montreal or Quebec City. The final choice of the location where you will sit the exam is up to the OIIQ, however, depending on the number of places available.
  • Please note that, to meet demand:
  • you can sit the exam in English or French at both sites, and both sites will be equipped to handle students who require accommodation measures;
  • it is essential that you provide this information when registering for the exam.

If you cannot register for or sit the professional examination or receive a failing mark

Applicable regulation

Regulation respecting the terms and conditions for the issue of permits by the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (CQLR, c. I-8, r. 13)

If you are in one of the following four situations:

1- You cannot register for or sit the professional examination (section 10)

You must complete and submit the Request for cancellation of a failure on the professional examination form, which the Order will send you, with all the appropriate supporting documents.

Your failure to register or your absence from the examination may be justified in the following situations:

  • childbirth;
  • death of your father, mother, child or spouse;
  • a health problem concerning you;
  • unavoidable circumstances.

You must provide the Order with a birth certificate, a death certificate accompanied by proof of your family relationship, a marriage certificate, a medical certificate or any other document supporting your request.

If you cite unavoidable circumstances, i.e. a serious, unforeseeable and unavoidable event beyond your control, you must prove to the satisfaction of the Order that this situation prevented you from registering for or sitting the professional examination.

Anyone who has paid registration fees for the examination, but was unable to attend for reasons deemed valid, will have their registration fees refunded, less the administration expenses incurred by the Order.

2- You are in the DEC-BAC program (section 9)

You are allowed not to attend the first session of the professional examination after obtaining your diploma of college studies, if you are taking at least 12 credits in the Bachelor's degree in nursing science program as part of the integrated DEC-BAC program.

You must provide an attestation from your educational institution for this purpose.

You must also register for the following session of the professional examination.

3- You obtained your recognition of diploma equivalence fewer than 90 days before the date of the professional examination (section 9)

If you obtained your diploma outside Quebec and were granted equivalence fewer than 90 days before the date of the professional examination, you are allowed not to register for the professional examination. It is important to note that if you decide to sit the examination, and fail it, you will not be able to request that the failure be cancelled on these grounds.

You must complete the request by a candidate to be released from the obligation to sit the professional examination (Demande d’une candidate de se soustraire à l’obligation de se présenter à l’examen professionnel), which you will receive by email along with confirmation of your status of candidate for the profession of nursing (CPN).

You must also register for the following session of the professional examination.

4- You receive a failing mark on the examination (section 12)

If you sit the examination and receive a failing mark, you must prove to the Order’s satisfaction that your physical or mental state at the time of the examination was such that you could not sit the examination. You must provide a medical certificate for this purpose.

When you receive your results on the professional examination, you will also receive the Request for cancellation of a failure on the professional examination form, which you may complete and submit to the Order with any supporting documents you consider appropriate.

Deadline for having a failing mark cancelled (section 11.1)

Your request for cancellation of a failing mark on the professional examination must reach the Order no later than 60 days after:

  • the deadline for registering for the professional examination, if you did not register for the examination;
  • the date of the professional examination, if you did not sit the examination;
  • the date you received the professional examination results, if you sat the examination and received a failing mark.

Requests received after the deadline will not be accepted, unless you can prove to the Order’s satisfaction that you could not submit your request by the 60-day deadline. Similarly, requests not accompanied by supporting documents will not be analyzed.

Accommodation measures

To ensure that you can take the examination under the best possible conditions, you may request accommodation measures if you have a disability, as specified in the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms (CQLR, c. C-12). For more information, see the website of the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse (http://www.cdpdj.qc.ca/en/droits-de-la-personne/Pages/default.aspx.)

Along with your request, you must include with your online examination registration form :

  • a letter justifying the accommodations requested (please be specific);
  • a medical certificate or a report by a specialist, identifying your disability and the necessary accommodation measures;
  • all documents describing the accommodations made for you during your studies, if any.

These documents must be recent (in the past five years). Otherwise the Order may ask for other documentary proof to justify your request.

Any consultations with professionals are at your expense.

The Order may grant all of the accommodation measures requested or only some of them, in which case it will provide the appropriate explanations.

If you pass the professional examination, you will be issued a regular permit, unless you do not have a knowledge of French appropriate to the practice of nursing or if you wish to practise on a Native reserve, provided you live or have lived there.
