Recognition of training equivalence

The goal of the training equivalence recognition process is to determine if you have acquired a level of knowledge and skill equivalent to that acquired by a person who holds a Quebec diploma leading to the SNP specialist certificate.

To apply, you must meet the two following requirements:

1. Hold a graduate diploma in nursing or a related field;

2. Over the five years prior to submitting your training equivalence application, you must have completed 3,360 hours in clinical practice as a nurse or as a nurse practitioner, including 1,680 hours working with patients in your specialty (primary care, pediatric care, adult care or mental health care) OR in an intermediate or intensive care unit, if your specialty is neonatalogy

Procedure

Follow this procedure to apply for a training equivalence and obtain your specialist certificate.

Step 1: Compile your application

To submit your file, you must apply for recognition of training equivalence online and attach the following required documents in PDF format. Note that a file processing fee of $758.84 applies.

Please note that, if necessary, you can use the French version of those forms.

Document requirements

  • Note that the various documents you request from the various entities can be provided to you by mail or email, or in person.
  • We must however be able to clearly see the official seal of the entity and the signature of the designated person.
  • For the other documents, please scan the originals

We will email you to confirm receipt of your application. We will then check all of the documents and contact you if any information is missing. Random checks might also be conducted with the relevant entities.

We will notify you when your application is considered complete and confirm the date when it will be presented to the SNP Admission by Equivalence Committee. The processing time for a complete application is a few weeks. We are unfortunately unable to provide a more specific timeline, since it is dependent on the volume and nature of applications received and Committee member availability.

Step 2: Receive the decision of the SNP Admission by Equivalence Committee

Your application will be presented to the SNP Admission by Equivalence Committee, which will determine whether your academic and professional background has given you a level of knowledge and skills that is equivalent to that of a person who holds a diploma leading to the SNP specialist certificate in Quebec.

If the Committee determines that level has been acquired, you will receive recognition of training equivalence without any additional conditions.

If the Committee considers that level has not been acquired, it will set out the additional conditions to fulfil for your training equivalence to be recognized. The conditions could include theory courses, continuing training on specific subjects, or an internship of a length determined by your specific background.

Step 3: Fulfil any conditions required by the Committee

If you must take theory courses, you will have to find and register at an educational institution that offers the courses required.

If an internship is required, you will have to find an employer who will allow you to complete your internship. The employer must be a centre operated by an establishment with a director of care.

Note that prior to starting your internship, you must obtain an internship authorization from the OIIQ. A fee of $183.96 applies.

Once you have met all conditions, your training equivalence will be recognized.

Step 4: Obtain the status of specialized nurse practitioner candidate

Once you receive your training equivalence, you will be granted the status of specialized nurse practitioner candidate (SNPC).

To work in that capacity, you must request and receive your SNPC attestation of practice from us. A fee of $229.95 applies.

IPS-CIPS-Demande d’attestation d’exercice à titre de candidate infirmière praticienne spécialisée ou de candidat infirmier praticien spécialisé form

Step 5: Pass the SNP professional examination

Once we have recognized your training equivalence, we will invite you to write the professional examination for specialized nurse practitioners (SNP). A fee of $770.33 applies.

The exam can be written in French or in English, and may be attempted three times over a three-year period to pass it.

Once you have passed the SNP professional examination, we will issue your specialist certificate to allow you to practise in that capacity.
