Description
Nurses who provide general care or front-line services are likely to find themselves working with patients who require palliative or end-of-life care. Although this type of assistance is part of everyday life for many in our profession, most nurses have never had any training to guide them in providing the care and support patients and their families need.
This training is designed to give nurses a tool chest for providing appropriate care to patients who are receiving palliative or end-of-life care. It is specifically intended to develop nurses’ skills in assessing and managing pain and other symptoms. Participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with ways of approaching a person at the end of life and place their learning in context through many authentic clinical scenarios.
Learning objectives:
- To integrate a palliative approach throughout the illness of patients with a guarded prognosis and their families that respects their values, beliefs and traditions;
- To evaluate the patient’s physical and mental condition;
- To ensure nursing follow-up with patients suffering from an illness with a guarded prognosis or at the end of life, in accordance with the foundations of palliative care;
- To establish a positive therapeutic relationship with patients and their families;
- To ensure leadership in nursing, both with the immediate members of the caregiving team and with members of the interdisciplinary team.
